Bushmans Kloof winter food and wine weekends are back

Breathtaking Cedarberg lodge Bushmans Kloof Wilderness Reserve & Wellness Retreat will once again be hosting a series of not-to-be-missed Food and Wine Weekends this winter.

Come winter and the one thing most of us are already wistfully anticipating is the return of summer – but the cooler months are not without their joys. A member of the prestigious Relais & Châteaux, Bushmans Kloof – the five-star lodge set in the Western Cape mountain town of Clanwilliam – is promising exceptional seasonal foodie experiences that could make anyone want winter to linger a little longer. Running from May to July, the Food and Wine Weekend menus that capture the natural flavours and essence of the Cape Floral Kingdom with many of the fresh ingredients coming straight from the lodge’s organic gardens.

For the forthcoming Food and Wine Weekends, the lodge is teaming up with some of South Africa’s most esteemed wineries. The tone is set for the first Food and Wine Weekend of the year by a collaboration with South Africa’s oldest wine farm, Groot Constantia. Nestled in the fertile Constantia Valley, the 330-year-old wine estate stands as a pinion of excellence for the wine industry, and is an ideal example of the preservation of South African culture and heritage. Winemaker Boela Gerber specialises in red vintages, including Shiraz and Pinotage, as well as white varietals, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. 27-29 May

Bushmans Kloof’s second Food and Wine event will combine gastronomic pleasures with a selection of Cederberg’s finest vintages as selected by Cederberg Private Cellar, which lies between Citrusdal and Clanwilliam. Here, at South Africa’s highest winery, winemaker Dawid Niewoudt sculpts dramatic red and white wines at an altitude of more than 1 000m above sea level, where a cool continental climate, diverse soil types, unpolluted air and crystal-clear waters combined produce wines of excellent quality, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc and Bukettraube. 10-12 June

Delaire Graff Estate, the iconic destination for wine, art and hospitality on the crest of the panoramic Helshoogte Mountain Pass, takes centre stage for the third Food and Wine Weekend of 2016. Respected winemaker Morné Very’s vision is to keep the integrity of the superlative grapes without over manipulation. He does so by only using authentic winemaking methods, resulting in reds, whites, rosé and sparkling Brut that have achieved First Growth status in South Africa – a reward for creating the country’s most desirable wines on first pressing. 17-19 June

The 2016 series Bushman’s Kloof Food and Wine Weekend concludes with the joint gastronomic forces of Bushmans Kloof’s culinary team and renowned winemaker and ‘Pinot pioneer’ Peter Finlayson of Bouchard Finlayson. Located in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, Bouchard Finlayson is framed by mountains and within sight of the ocean, with frost-free, beneficial weather and the most perfect clay shale vineyard soils to produce award-winning wines of outstanding quality. Half of the estate’s vines are devoted to their acclaimed Pinot Noir, while other cultivars under production include Chardonnay, Sauvignon blanc and Sangiovese. 8-10 July
