Iconic watch re-issue to celebrate 40 years of fashion

Beautiful watches and beautiful victories never go out of style. Originally designed to celebrate racing driver Niki Lauda's first world championship title with Ferrari in 1976, the Heuer Monza Chronograph was re-issued this year to celebrate its 40th anniversary.

Designed by Jack Heuer, the great grandson of the iconic Swiss brand’s founder, the watch was the beginning of a long collaboration with Monza.

The black coussin case, inspired by a 1925 model, remains the centrepiece of the watch. Like the 1976 model, the watch has a black and white lacquered hour and minute hands. The indices in vintage orange SuperLuminova and the historic Heuer logo on the dial attest to the model’s place in the manufacturer’s timeless collection. Highlighting how metal has changed through the ages, the case (previously from steel) is now made from grade 5 titanium, making it lighter and more shock resistant. The material is coated with titanium carbide to give it a powerful, matt black appearance.

Two features, the pulsometer (to measure heart rate) and the tachymeter scale (which converts time into speed), appear for the first time since 1976 in the reissue. Equipped with a “super racing” strap in full-grain black calfskin with top-stitching, it evokes the design of the three-spoke steering wheel on the racing cars of the time.

For more than 150 years, TAG Heuer has defied the time-honoured conventions of Swiss watchmaking, leading to ever higher levels of precision and performance. The highly sought-after Heuer Monza is no exception and has been reissued only a handful of times. So close to the spirit of the original, this 40th-anniversary model undoubtedly represents a milestone in the history of the manufacturer’s heritage.
