David Goldblatt’s On the Mines exhibition at Norval Foundation
Shown for the first time in its entirety at Norval Foundation, On the Mines: David Goldblatt is the last exhibition that the photographer personally helped conceptualise before his death in 2018.
In this exhibition, Goldblatt is revealed as the great chronicler and documenter of South Africa: the quiet observer of how the country, its peoples, its institutions and landscape have been inscribed by politics and power. The series of eighty-five photographs of the gold mines and surrounding communities engage conceptually with mining’s pivotal significance as the driver of the South African economy in the 1960s and 1970s.
David Goldblatt’s exhibition opens on Wednesday, 13 February at Norval Foundation and offers his remarkable photographs in dialogue with the words of Nadine Gordimer, a Nobel Laureate, and his lifelong friend.
Strauss & Co contemporary art sale
Strauss & Co’s second contemporary art sale is the only sale in South Africa devoted exclusively to this exciting category.
Highlights from the forthcoming sale include rare early works by Marlene Dumas and William Kentridge, among South Africa’s most celebrated artists internationally. Produced in the 1970s, Naked Man (estimate R1.5 – 2 million) is an early student work by Marlene Dumas and identifies her future trajectory as a gestural painter interested in retaining the illusion of the pictorial image.
Strauss & Co’s contemporary art sale will take place on Saturday, 16 February at the Cape Town Cruise Terminal of the V&A Waterfront.
Investec Cape Town Art Fair
Now in its seventh edition, organisers of the Investec Cape Town Art Fair 2019 have once again pulled out all the stops to ensure that visitors are able to view the best of contemporary African, and international art.
More than 100 galleries and exhibitors from around Africa will gather at the upcoming art fair. Local and international visitors will descend on the mother city to see work that represents the forefront of contemporary art, live performances, attend talks, soak up the sun and create connections.
The Investec Cape Town Art Fair takes place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) from 15 to 17 February 2019.
