It was his brother’s love for American smooth jazz that introduced a young Ramon Alexander, a classical pianist, to jazz. A trip to the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown cemented his love for the genre and by the time he was 18, he was tutored by Cape Town piano and vibes player Merton Barrow at his jazz workshop. Fitting to his performance at the premium wine farm, Ramon studied winemaking before committing himself to his first love: music. He is a regular on the Cape Town jazz scene – both as pianist and composer – playing a repertoire of Cape-composed music (both historic and modern) at established venues such as the Crypt.
