Driving history

A select few took home some priceless works of art at the recent Artcurial’s Rétromobile Auction in Paris.

Collectors from around the world gathered at the Hotel Marcel Dassault in Paris in February to bid on pieces of driving history. Here are some of the cars that had them in raptures.

Maserati A6 GCS/53 Spyder

Body by Fiandri and Malagoli. It left the factory on 4 February 1955 and was delivered to Turin racer Attilio Buffa, who drove it in races such as the 1955 Mille Miglia. This was a historically important model, both aesthetically and technically, laying the foundations for Maserati’s revival in competition after the Second World War. A powerful competitor in hill-climbing and road races, this model revived Maserati’s racing fortunes after the Second World War. Sold: € 2 445 600.

2006 Ferrari FXX

The rarest of Ferrari’s supercars was a prototype sold to 29 selected buyers who became the model’s test drivers. They were only allowed to drive it on special track days approved by Ferrari. One more model was built later as a gift for Michael Schumacher when he retired. Sold: € 2 674 400.

1938 Bugatti Type 57C Coupé Atalante

One of the most exclusive and sought-after of all Bugattis, this one was built for display at the Geneva Motor Show. It has a lively history that included a range of colours, some damage and restoration and finally a long trip to its new California home in 1961. Sold: € 2 903 200.

1957 Ferrari 335 Sport Scaglietti

The ultimate Italian racing machine of its time. This model made its big-race debut at the last ever Mille Miglia and finished a respectful second – Ferrari etiquette dictated that driver Wolfgang von Trips could not overtake his stablemate, who limped to the finishing line with transmission problems. The car was driven by legends, including Stirling Moss, in races from Sweden to Venezuela. Sold: € 32 100 000 – a world record price for a car at auction.
