The new restaurant will offer refined bistro-style fare and an extensive wine list that features the best of South African wine, as well as a curated selection of fine wines from around the world.
Says Matt Manning, Chef Patron and director of the Grub & Vine group: “Situated at the Norval Foundation – a custodian and protector of African visual art – Grub & Norval sets out to celebrate the commonality between beautiful food, wine and art.
“Art – whether it be visual, culinary or the artistry of winemaking – invokes emotion. It has the power to make you feel nostalgic, invigorated or inspired. We not only believe in the beautiful synergy between all three; our vision is for our guests to feel it too.”
He adds that he has enormous respect for Louis Norval, founder of the Norval Foundation, and that the two enjoy a shared love for great food and wine. “When I visited the Norval Foundation sometime in August, Louis showed me his impressive on-site wine collection. That was my ‘penny-drop’ moment: we needed to do a Grub & Vine at Norval, bringing everything we do well at our Bree Street establishment to this stunning setting and art haven.”
Louis Norval states that the collaboration is a natural fit for the Norval Foundation, “Matt’s reputation as a restaurateur precedes him and we are delighted to be welcoming Grub & Vine to the Norval Foundation. Matt’s passion for food and wine aligns perfectly with the Norval Foundation’s objective to support an appreciation for good food and wine paired with the art and culture events we are so known for. The elegant yet relaxed atmosphere of the new Grub & Vine Norval will be the perfect fit for us and will be a dining destination where art, food, wine and culture come together. Manning says that as with its sister restaurant on Bree, guests to Grub & Vine Norval can enjoy a warm and inviting ambience. “For our interiors, we’re once again working with Monya Eastman from Stokperd, who is also the creative force behind our 103 Bree Street establishment.
“Rich colours and gorgeous textures will inject a sense of warmth into the space, while not detracting from the structural magnificence of the Norval building. The kitchen is open plan and a key feature of the space, with a 16-seater Chef’s Table giving guests a front row seat to the action. Just off the main dining room and up a staircase is the Grub & Vine bar, where guests can enjoy a glass of wine or dine from our bar menu while enjoying spectacular views of the garden.
“We’re also excited about our spacious outdoor deck, which will be very popular in the warmer months.”
He adds that his vision is for Grub & Vine Norval to become a hub for bespoke art and wine events.
