At the V&A Waterfront, Gucci has quietly changed its Cape Town address. The House’s new store takes a more considered approach to luxury retail, with an interior that feels as much like a private residence as a traditional boutique.

Gucci has been at the Waterfront since 2008, and the latest iteration brings a distinctly contemporary feel to the space. Rather than one expansive room, the store is arranged as a sequence of interconnected areas, with open, light-filled spaces giving way to more intimate corners.

The materials do much of the talking. Stone sets the architectural foundation, offset by the warmth of teak and walnut, while brushed stainless steel, bronze and mirrored surfaces add sharper, more reflective details. Leather and fabric bring softness to the mix, creating a balance between the rigorous and the residential.

It’s a setting designed to let the collections sit within the architecture rather than compete with it. Women’s and men’s ready-to-wear are joined by handbags, shoes, small leather goods, jewellery, watches, eyewear, silk accessories and fragrances, with custom display elements and carefully selected furnishings woven throughout the space.

The result is a Gucci store that feels distinctly of the moment: pared back, tactile and quietly theatrical, with lighting used to pick out the grain of the materials and bring focus to the pieces on display.

For a city increasingly attuned to design, fashion and considered spaces, it makes for an interesting addition to the Waterfront, and one worth seeing beyond the window display.
