Jacob Hendrik Pierneef’s work is closely associated with the South African landscape. Now, a collection of his original works is being presented in a new setting at La Motte in Franschhoek, alongside an introduction to the estate’s Pierneef Collection wines.
The relationship between La Motte and Pierneef began in 2002, when the estate launched its premium Pierneef Collection. The connection was rooted in a shared interest in the South African landscape, nature, architecture and the preservation of local heritage.
It developed further in 2009, when La Motte acquired 42 original works from the private collection of Pierneef’s daughter, Marita Bailey. The collection had been held in the UK and included works in various media, from preliminary sketches and studies to completed oil paintings, dating from 1908 to 1955.
For more than a decade, the works were displayed in the La Motte Museum. They have now moved to the estate’s Manor House, where they form the centrepiece of the new Pierneef Wine & Art Experience.
The hour-long experience offers an opportunity to view the collection and accompanying memorabilia while learning more about Pierneef and his work. It also brings together two of La Motte’s Pierneef Collection wines, served with four canapés.
The setting adds another layer to the story. The Manor House dates to around 1758 and is part of La Motte’s wider architectural and cultural heritage, placing Pierneef’s work within the historic environment that inspired the estate’s long-standing interest in preserving South African art and history.
It is a chance to see a collection that has been closely connected to La Motte for more than 20 years, now presented in the historic Manor House alongside the wines that carry Pierneef’s name.
The Pierneef Wine & Art Experience begins on 7 October 2026 and runs on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 10am to 11am. Tickets cost R250 per person.
