Hand sanitiser and face masks from luxury brands

Amid the COVID-19 outbreak, and like so many other sectors, the luxury market has lost billions. But that hasn't stopped some of the most prominent names in the game from donating millions to help those affected by the coronavirus.

Here are two examples we love: Louis Vuitton owner LVMH says that its perfume and cosmetics factories – which normally produce fragrances for labels including Christian Dior, Givenchy and Guerlain – are producing disinfectant gel to help combat a shortage of hand sanitiser across France. The gel will be free and first shipments to health authorities across the nation were expected to arrive yesterday.

High-end fashion houses Saint Laurent and Balenciaga have announced that they would be producing face masks. Initially conjuring up images of $2 000 haute couture mask sales, the parent group Kering, which also owns Gucci, stressed that the masks would be pumped into French supplies, easing the worsening shortages of protective gear in the country.

The good stories will keep coming, as we battle together against this devastating pandemic.
