A sale of historically significant works
Strauss & Co has announced details of its offerings from four major private collections due to be sold at its much-anticipated March 2019 auction in Cape Town. This sale will feature top-class paintings from The Shill Collection and The Late Sol Munitz Collection, as well as Cape furniture pieces from The Collection of Dr Johan Bolt and Oriental works of art from The Dr JR and Mary Strong Collection. The sale will take place this Monday 18 March at the Vineyard Hotel in Cape Town.
Is this Leonardo da Vinci’s only surviving sculpture?
According to The Guardian, earlier this week a group of Italian art historians discovered what they claim is the only surviving and finished sculpture by Leonardo da Vinci, The Virgin with the Laughing Child. The 1472 sculpture in question has been housed at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum since 1858 and up until now was attributed to Antonio Rossellino.

Porky Hefer’s homage to Jean-Michel Basquiat
The designer’s latest hanging chair is a tribute to the late Jean-Michel Basquiat, an artist renowned for his politically saturated art. Titled Boom For Real, Porky wants those seated in the woven cane piece to experience the world through the eyes of Basquiat. The large crest protruding from the back is constructed from cane and wrapped in synthetic hair from Cape Town beauty salons and has been sealed with the same hairspray that Porky’s late mother used – a final melancholic touch drawn from his own life story. The chair is currently on show at Southern Guild Collectible Design Gallery in Cape Town.
